A Must-See Educational, Cultural and Historical Experience in Philadelphia
At the only Philadelphia-area museum with an extensive collection of slavery artifacts, visitors will learn about a critical period of American history through riveting exhibits and informative presentations.
Displaying artifacts from the trans-Atlantic slave trade, LWF’s rare collections bring history alive through firsthand storytelling. African Americans and other history buffs are immersed in artifacts, documents, Jim Crow objects and other related items from the black holocaust.
As the only museum in Philadelphia of its kind, LWF has the most extensive collection of slave artifacts including shackles, branding irons and other forms of punishing ironware. In addition, several Bill of Sale documents—promoting the buying and selling of enslaved African human beings as if they were “chattel”—are exhibited. These astonishing items will prompt families, educational groups and other visitors to explore and discuss the fires of bigotry and racism as part of black history.
J. Justin & Gwen Ragsdale, a husband and wife team, founded LWF in 2002. Mr. Ragsdale acquired the numerous LWF collectibles during the past 45 year to convey the harrowing experiences of slaves. Mrs. Ragsdale, a trained public speaker and natural storyteller, integrates historic accounts and actual slave narratives in riveting presentations; she also coordinates the museum tours and traveling exhibits.
LWF highlights the legacy of slavery and recognizes the generations of slave ancestors who provided free labor in the building of America. LWF documentary film productions about slavery, Connect the Past with the Present, have won several national and international awards. Remember the legacy of slavery lest we forget, and schedule an appointment to visit LWF today.
